Don founded Nexus to answer the horticulture industry’s need for a well-built greenhouse that would meet building requirements and withstand severe weather. In 1994, the company was purchased by Cheryl Longtin and Mike Porter, whose past experience in international corporations allowed Nexus to go beyond the traditional greenhouse manufacturing role. In 2016, Nexus was acquired by Gibraltar Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of building products for industrial, transportation, infrastructure, residential housing, renewable energy, and resource conservation markets.

McCrimmon was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte and their son, Neal. He is survived by his other children Kirk McCrimmon (Renee) and Donna Kaiser (Craig), and his eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
