Vertical Farming Seen as Possible Solution To Food Supply Disruption

One of the side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a disruption in the food supply chain network around the world, according to the United Nations Systems Standing Committee for Nutrition (UNSCN). 

Along with that, other natural disasters, such as the California forest fires last year, have added to this disruption.

Investors have been looking into vertical farming technology as a possible solution to these problems, according to KFGO.com.  

There have been many big names backing this idea, including former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. He currently backs BrightFarms, AppHarvest, and Elevate in their plans to build vertical and urban farms across the country.  

Even the USDA has shown its support for vertical farming technology by seeking members for a new urban agriculture advisory committee to encourage indoor and other emerging farm practices.

Some critics seem to fear the environmental impact of vertical farms, as they require artificial lighting and temperature control. However, those running vertical farming operations say that comparing energy use with outdoor operations is not as straightforward as it seems. They also claim to use less water and no pesticides, unlike outdoor operations.
