2026 Greenhouse Training Online Continues with “Substrates for Container-Grown Plants”
“Substrates for Container-Grown Plants” starts on Monday, June 1, 2026, and is the next course in the 2026 Greenhouse Training Online series from the University of Florida IFAS Extension (UF/IFAS). This intermediate-level course is designed for those with some training or entry-level university experience in production, technical, or sales roles in the greenhouse or nursery industry.
“Substrates for Container-Grown Plants” Course Topics
Course participants will learn about:
- Why plants are grown in substrates
- Soil physics
- Materials used to make substrates
- Substrate testing and the meaning of results
- How to measure the amount of water and air in the container
- Substrates for specific nursery and greenhouse crop situations
“Substrates for Container-Grown Plants” Schedule and Registration
The “Substrates for Container-Grown Plants” course runs June 1–26, 2026, and is a requirement for the Root Zone Expert program. Available in English and Spanish, all course material is completely online and available at any time of the day. It includes pre-recorded videos, quizzes, and an interactive discussion board with instructors Dr. Loren Oki, Professor Emeritus at UC Davis, and Dr. Jeb Fields, an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida. Two new modules are activated each week during the course, for a total of eight learning modules. Instruction is at each participant’s own pace and time within the four weeks of the course, with a typical time commitment of about five hours per week.
