Canopy Growth Shutters 3 Million Square Feet of Cannabis Greenhouse Space in Canada

Canopy Growth, one of North America’s largest legal cannabis operations, announced today it plans to close production facilities in Aldergrove and Delta, BC, resulting in the elimination of approximately 500 positions, according to a press release from the company.

In addition, Canopy no longer plans to bring a third greenhouse online in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. These actions are part of the Company’s effort to align supply and demand while improving production efficiencies.

The greenhouses in BC account for approximately 3 million square feet and were put into commission, beginning in February 2018, after a period of phased retrofitting to help Canopy Growth scale up to supply the new Canadian adult-use market.

The company says that its outdoor production sites have proven “more cost effective.”
