How Cannabis Production Research Is Expanding in Canada

Canada’s Vineland Research and Innovation Centre continues to add to its research services portfolio with a newly acquired Cannabis Research License under Health Canada’s Cannabis Act.
The license allows Vineland to conduct research, analysis, and trials in a number of disciplines including biochemical studies, plant production, genetic diversity, and the development of elite cannabis varieties, along with integrated pest management solutions to support and advance the industry.
Vineland’s trait development and genomics services spin-off company Platform Genetics Inc. will also play a role in offering services under license provisions.
“The cannabis license allows us to expand our services to clients in the horticulture sector, providing licensed producers and technology providers results-based solutions for cannabis production,” says Tania Humphrey, Ph.D., Vineland’s Vice President, Research & Development.
Since its legalization in 2018, cannabis has become the most valuable crop in Canadian horticulture, with an estimated annual market value of $5.7 billion, according to Statistics Canada.
Investment into the Vineland campus to support the cannabis license was made possible with the assistance of Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario (ARIO) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).
