New Disease Control Option for Greenhouse Vegetables and Herbs

High-end greenhouse tomato containers Segway O

OHP, Inc. has announced a label expansion for the greenhouse and nursery fungicide Segway O that allows the product to be used for control of pythium, phytophthora, and downy mildew on certain greenhouse-grown vegetables and herbs transplants.

“We wanted to give users more flexibility with Segway O because of the success of the product on non-food ornamentals in the greenhouse and nursery,” says Dan Stahl, OHP Vice President and General manager. “It’s a very timely label addition with the exponential growth in the greenhouse-grown vegetable and herb segments.”

Containing the active ingredient cyazofamid, Segway O is an invaluable alternative to commonly used fungicides where widespread resistance to the water mold diseases has developed, notes Dr. Carlos Bográn, OHP Manager, Technical Services.

“As the only product from MOA 21, Segway O is an excellent choice for resistant strains of pythium and phytophtora on ornamentals and now greenhouse-grown vegetables and herbs,” Bográn says. Growers “should always use products from different chemical classes with different modes of action,” adds Dr. Bográn.

Segway O is labeled for use on greenhouse-grown tomatoes, greenhouse-grown bell peppers, and greenhouse-grown herbs such as basil and others in Subgroup A. Segway O carries a 0-day PHI.

“Basil downy mildew has become quite an issue in recent years, and this provides greenhouse herb growers another option, which is important,” Bográn says.
