Tips to Prevent the Spread of Powdery Mildew in Greenhouses

Just about any greenhouse-grown crop, whether it’s a flower or a vegetable, can be susceptible to powdery mildew, according to Steve Bogash, Territory Sales Manager at Marrone Bio Innovations.

“There are a lot of resistant varieties out there, but resistance doesn’t mean that they don’t have some degree of susceptibility to it,” Bogash says. “There are few plants that cannot get powdery mildew.”

The good news, Bogash says, is that the symptoms of powdery mildew are relatively easy to spot.

“When you look at the bottom side of leaves, the first thing you are going to see is a pencil eraser-sized circle of white to very light-gray markings,” Bogash says. “That’s easily the most common symptom, and by the time you see it, you know you’ve got infection scattered throughout that area and it’s time to do something.”
