Why the Greenhouse Environment Matters in Powdery Mildew Control

Powdery mildew can be a challenge for many growers because it occurs on the lower third half of the plant under the canopy. By the time the disease is detected, it is already established and affecting plant quality.

Paul Pilon, Technical Manager at OHP, says another issue with powdery mildew is it is not the shoulder-season disease people may think it is, meaning it only occurs in late spring or early fall when there are greater fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels. Growers need to keep in mind that this disease can occur throughout the entire growing season.

Fortunately, there are a few things growers can do to avoid issues with this common disease, according to Pilon.

  • Grow plants with wide spacing to increase air circulation or movement around the leaves.
  • Install horizontal airflow fans.
  • Monitor relative humidity closely. If you have the right type of facility, one option is to provide humidity control through humidity purges.
  • Take advantage of the many preventative and curative fungicide options available on the market.
