Stuppy Greenhouse Celebrating 150 Years of Innovation and Service to Growers

Stuppy 150 LogoStuppy Greenhouse, Inc., has survived countless industry changes and economic disruptions, yet after 150 years it remains family held. Five generations of the Stuppy family have helmed the company since 1873. The company’s decades of experience as growers plays a part in every decision made as leading manufacturers of state-of-the-art greenhouses.

From the time founder Laurence “L.J.” Stuppy began selling roses from a storefront in St. Joseph, MO, Stuppy Greenhouse has adapted as the markets changed, and sometimes changed the market itself. That is the core of the company’s success, along with the perseverance and hard work at the heart of any long-lasting business. Stuppy’s business direction has evolved from its origin as a cut flower supplier to a wholesale floral supply (ribbons and vases) business to a successful greenhouse construction and manufacturing company. Stuppy closed the cut flower business and the wholesale floral division decades ago, but the company — and its president, Matt Stuppy — remain growers at heart.

More recently, Stuppy Greenhouse has expanded into offering construction services along with its greenhouse structures (all made in the U.S.) and is identifying new areas where it can offer innovative technology, such as heating and growing systems.

“We are focused on optimization, such as reducing the number of glazing bars, having fewer parts, better quality, and integrating more automated systems,” Stuppy says. “We have also developed hydronic heating and hydroponic growing systems for greenhouses, so we can provide excellent services in those areas as well. All of these contribute to energy efficiency, better plant quality and lower maintenance costs.”

Along with its commercial greenhouses, Stuppy Greenhouse is one of the leading suppliers of greenhouse structures for schools and universities, meaning it is a primary greenhouse company providing growing environments that foster the next generation of growers, whether it’s high school students learning horticulture basics or scholars at leading universities testing out the industry’s cutting-edge solutions.

“With our company experience as growers and manufacturers, we are able to help identify customers’ needs, customize the greenhouse for the technology they require and build it properly,” Stuppy says. “The nice thing about having been in business for 150 years is we can look back and see where the company pivoted or adjusted to different market trends and technologies. We are continuing to do that, which is why we have developed heating products and growing system products that we know will be successful for the grower. We will continue to diversify into other areas of controlled-environment agriculture and play a part in the success of the greenhouse industry.”

Stuppy Greenhouse plans to celebrate its 150 years at Cultivate’23 in Columbus, OH, from July 16-18, 2023. Visit Stuppy.com/stuppy150 for more about Stuppy’s 150th anniversary.
