Intrinsic Perennial Gardens Debuts New Prairie Dropseed Variety
Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Inc. has announced the introduction of a new prairie dropseed: Sporobolus heterolepis ‘Golden Needles’.
Native to prairie grasslands from Canada to Texas, Sporobolus has a wide North American distribution through 26 states and provinces. Customers often select ornamental grasses for their contribution to plant combinations or for use in landscaping meadows and borders. Additionally, they are valued for being pest-free and for their ability to tolerate tough environments.
Sporobolus heterolepis ‘Golden Needles’ is an all-gold-leafed form of Intrinsic’s native prairie dropseed. With good vigor and size, Golden Needles grows well in dry, well-drained soils, and its foliage is at its brightest, turning to a chartreuse by midsummer, in full sun. This variety flowers at 2–3 feet, with an 18–24-inch spread, and is hardy in Zones 3–9.
Golden Needles is available from Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, with divisions from Baker’s Nursery in Canada, and tissue culture from Microplant in Oregon.
