How Plant Leasing Has Become a Viable Business Model for One Retailer

The COVID-19 pandemic is leading to some unique business models. One example of that is Leaf + Quiet, a plant retailer in Missoula, MT, that is now allowing customers to rent plants for a brief period of time, most likely houseplants for the holidays, then return them.

“I realized that a lot of people have holiday homes and they buy houseplants, and they let them die over the winter, which just didn’t make a lot of sense to me,” says Clare Cornberg, owner of Leaf + Quiet. “I figured somebody should start something where you can lease plants so you can just have them part-time, and then somebody could take them back when you’re finished with them.”

Cornberg says customers can still purchase plants, or they can lease them.
