According to Brentlinger, efficient cannabis production can be defined by the constant drive to eliminate waste while maximizing desired characteristics, with these characteristics being at the center of importance.

Efficiency is based on goals such as maximum visual appeal for smokable flower, maximum oil and terpene production for extraction, maximum yield, or craft growing.

He notes fertilizers/fertigation as one of the more common issues in cannabis production. Huge operations are still hand-watering thousands of plants, while at the same time seeing smaller growers spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on fertigation skids and then turning around and feeding off the shelf, liquid hobby nutrients.
