Act Early for Best Control of Western Flower Thrips in the Greenhouse

With Western flower thrips, there are two different veins of thought in entomology about how to manage resistance, according to Tim Johnson, Vice President of Field Development and Technical Services for Marrone Bio Innovations.

“One is, you want to use one material for two or three consecutive sprays on a generation, and then turn to a different mode of action or IRAC code, so you take that selection pressure off a certain compound,” Johnson says. “The other thought is you want to have at least two active ingredients in every application.”

One thing you want to avoid for sure, Johnson says, is relying on one mode of action for a long period. That’s just going to lead to resistance, especially with Western flower thrips, which has demonstrated the ability to become resistant to virtually every mode of action that we’ve offered.
